Age Diverse Classroom

More often than not, I find that I am faced with a classroom of learners that range from seventeen and eighteen up to fifty. I struggle with creating common ground in a classroom like this. Does anyone have reccomendations about how to relate?

I also have an age diverse classroom and have found the younger students dont seem to care about age but some of the older ones try to impress with knowledge and that usualy backfires on them so i try to buffer over when that happens so as not to single anyone out

Alison,
In situations like this I put my students into learning groups. I mix the ages of the students so they get to work with individuals from age groups different from themselves. I assign them case studies and then I have the compete to solve the problems in the case studies. As they compete they work together and forget about the age or generational differences and focus on the task at hand.
