Helping Aged Students

It is important to let your older students know that they can learn just as the others do and have the same type of advantage that everyone else does. How can you make them feel less scared? Include them in discussions or ask them specific questions they know the answers to.

Include them by asking them to talk about their past experiences that may be very helpful to others who may not have had any experience in their field. This will allow all students to get to know each other more and be more comfortable in the classroom envirenment

Peter,
Students sometimes have problems with seeing the future as you will know. Your approach helps them to see their future and then they can plan for it by being successful in each of their classes. This is a good motivator for them.

In the ultrasound program, I usually start off by asking the class, where they see themselve in their chosen careers in 10 years.

Once I get some replies, I begin by letting them know that EVERYONE can achieve their goal and WILL achieve their goal in MY class.

I believe students need encouragement. It doesn't matter if they are 18 years old or 60 years old. Positive reinforcement is KEY. And believing yourself that what you are telling them can happen.

Juanito,
Great advice for teaching older students. They need this type of support as they strive to gain self confidence in their ability to be successful in the class.

Older students may have that feeling of inadequacy and less energy . It is up to the instructor to give them enough attention and guidance to get that confidence and trust in themselves that they can macth up with the younger students. Make them realize that they have that edge when it comes to experience and general knowledge. Stimulate them to get that energy back and enjoy what they do in class.

Courtney,
These learners need a bit of extra support because of the fear factor. Early success in a class really helps them see that they can be successful and that their life experiences will help them to progress in the class.
