respect

Respecting the students, is one of the best ways to earn their trust, to be able to educate in a manner where everyone benefits.

Indeed, in my opinion the process of education have to be base in respect and that needs to be mutual in between instructor and students.

Donald,
I agree about the need to earn respect. Respect cannot be assumed nor gifted. It is earned by showing to others that they are valued and that through interaction individuals can grow and benefit from each other. This is an important concept for students, especially younger ones to understand and practice.

As an educator, I feel that there is multiple levels of respect.
I show respect to the student for being enrolled in our school and attempting to better themselves by achieving their educaational goals.

One must respect the students background, age and life experiences.

Ultimately, as a student, the respect of the instructor must be earned, it is not automatic. It becomes difficult to respect a student who comes to class tardy or ill prepared for the class or shows little respect for the learning needs of fellow students.

Suzarie,
Teaching adults requires connecting their life experiences to what is being taught just as you mentioned. The more they can use these experiences in the class the greater their respect will be for you and what you are teaching.

I am always conscious of the fact that I am teaching adults some of whom are older than myself: it is important not to patronize them because great minds comes in different forms.

Travis,
Good point about the need for mutual and two way respect to be earned by all those involved in the learning setting. By earning student respect we show them we are about them and their success. By them earning our respect they are showing us they are dedicated learners. Together learning can and will occur and success will be enjoyed by all.

Respect is an important subject or topic in general. I can personally relate to this because I believe you must first understand your students and to respect them as well; in order to make them achieve a common goal.

Gina,
Respect is the foundation for trust and rapport. So we need to extend respect and earn respect and when this is done then moving can progress in a more effective manner.

Respect is not something that's accomplished in one day. It takes time and patience to get students to understand how important it is to respect others. Although ,it is a tough lesson to teach, getting students to show respect is one of the most important lessons they'll learn in school.

Anna,
Respect needs to be earned by both the students and instructor. Your point is a good one because without mutual respect then trust becomes lost.
