Andre,
I like your approach because the sense of entitlement is certainly present in many classes. You are helping your students to see the value of a good attitude and hard work in relation to career success. I wish you continued success along these lines because having this understanding about customers will pay off in their future careers.

When I notice any sense of "entitlement" among younger students and/or disrespect for the older students, I try to relate "how will your customers feel about your attitude when you graduate and enter your chosen profession/industry?" as well as "how would you feel if you were in the recieving end of a similar mindset/attitude?". Provoke them to "think about" the consequences of their actions and attitudes.
Linda,
I have this challenge almost each time I start a new class. I use a grading rubric where I can clearly illustrate to each student the reason why he or she received the points and grade they did. This does not stop my younger students from feeling entitled to an A and even in some cases demanding one but the rubric does help me to justify the grade that I give as a result of the work the student does.
As with you I don't have this situation with my older students because they are focused and dedicated to getting through the course successfully and earning the highest grade possible.
