Adult Education

What is the best approach to address a student that is not doing his or hers best because they think they can not compete with the younger classmates?

Bruce,
This is a good way to get student involvement as well as use an in-class resource.

I find that one student maybe able to relay my information using there own life experience making it clearer for some students in there class to understand.

I find it quite interesting to teach adult learners because even when teaching adult learners there is such a wide range of life experiences and can be quite interesting how each adult learner applies their life experience to get a concept.

Ricardo,
I have a private talk with such a student and try to get a feel as to just what area that student feels he or she is not strong in. Then I offer to help the student to expand their expertise in that area. I find that a session like this helps to build their self confidence. Depending on how the student does I sometimes will develop a special project for the student to help them be successful in the course so they will see that thy in fact can compete with younger classmates.
