School rules
I try as much as possible to compare the school rules to the workplace rules.
I also try to show students that the school's rules are rules for a purpose. It is helpful when they have been in the workplace and can see that rules are important wherever they go.
I agree with much of what has been said so far. In establishing the rules and the "ground rules" we make sure to explain to the students the rationale behind the rules: why we have them and how they serve the teaching/learning environment. Also, we explain that the teachers have their side of the bargain of following rules. This way the students get to understand that the rules are not simply imposed on them. By enrolling into our program and by agreeing to the rules they are participating in a mutually supportive agreement/arrangement that we are all resposible for making successful. When we all follow the rules, when teachers enforce the rules and when administration creates rules that are "follow-able" this allows for an environment where effective teaching and learning can take place.
Joe,
This is a concept that some students seem to have a hard time understanding. The better they understand this while in school the more successful they are going to be when they are in the work world.

I agree with this, as when they get in the workplace they need to follow rules or they will be fired
Angela,
This is a good way to hold the students accountable for having received the information about class policies. Thus they will be expected to follow them and not claim they didn't know about them. They did after all sign the sheet saying they received them.

The school provide rules and I also have my classroom rules typed up and each student must sign indicating that they received them and we review them together on the 1st day of school.
Troy,
Right you are and we as instructors cannot forget that at anytime. We are always being observed whether it be in or out of class so we must conduct ourselves as professionals and reflect the pride we have in our career field.

When you are in a school enviroment the rules are different.the reason is instead of following the rules. you are now leading by example. if the students see you breaking the rules they will follow your lead. now if you follow the rules and you are consistent on directing the rules the students again will follow by example

Stephane,
This is a good strategy to follow as it will help the students to transition into the workplace since they will have been in a similar setting throughout their course work.

Elizabeth,
By having a discussion on the operation of the class you are defining the expected behavior that the students need to display if they are going to be successful in the class. This gets them on the right track from the beginning.

I also do this, it is important to start this the very first class, so student know what to expect.
