Students with learning disabilities

It is very important to identify students with learning disabilities. There are various types of learning disabilities. Some students have problems in focusing, others have problems with reading, temperament, and some are hyper. Some students are slow as compared to rest of the class. I have seen students who take a lot of time to do a job but given the time they do a better job as compared to most students in the class.

Dealing with such students is a major challenge. I would like to invite suggestions for how to deal with such students.

Darrold,
With these resources you have a knowledge base and perspective on how to work with students that have learning challenges. I know your methods encourage and support their learning and helps them to understand they have a caring instructor.

The internet and GOOGLE especially, has been very helpful. Whether it's stuttering, poor reading or math skills, to behaviour issues. The research has helped my knowledge of these areas.

The most important thing is to identify exactly what kind of learning disability the student has. Once the specific kind of disability has been identified, it might be necessary for an instructor to do a little research to find out how to best accommodate the student's disability. This is a case where the instructor might have to make the student comfortable enough to be able to have a candid and inviting conversation about what the instructor can best do to help them.

Itake the time to learn varios types of desabilities to help my students. My School has very good acommodations.

Arif,
There are a number of strategies that can be used to enhance the learning of students with learning disabilities. One way to gain insight into what will be of help to them is to talk with them and see what worked successfully in high school. If students with learning disabilities self report to the Student Assistance Office of your college and disclose that they have a disability then the college with the students' permission can contact the high school and get information off of their IEPs (Individual Educational Plan). This will save a lot of time because many of the strategies will have already been used effectively. Also, some time should be spent talking with each student so they can share what they have found best to work for them in relation to needed accommodations.
