Feeling accepted because of rather than in spite of differences may be the key to a successful retention. If a teacher can bring out the benefits of background differences it may put students at ease and allow creativity to flow.
I often like to think of myself as facilitator rather than "teacher." The word teacher can have negative connotations at times in terms of superiority. As a facilitator, we are coordinating learning experiences rather than imparting knowledge onto another. Students need to know that the one in charge of teaching them is approachable rather than an authoritative figure.
Harlan,
These connections are so important for adult learners. Knowing that they have an understanding instructor goes a long way in getting them settled into the course and becoming forward focused in terms of course expectations.

I have a lot of vets that come through my class and I seem to build a good student teacher relationship with them. I believe this comes from my back ground working in the Military industry as a civilian.
Roseanne,
This is a very good point. Building on what each student brings to class in terms of life experiences increases the value seen by all of the students in relation to what each student contributes. This enhances the learning environment and sets the stage for some exciting discussions.
