Get Your Students Hired
I think when you take the opportunity to allow the student to share what they may have on their minds very early before class time begins, they will appreciate what the instructor allowed them to do and respect the instuctors authority in the classroom.

What are some things you do to help the students get settled in when you start your classes.?

I agree, that lets the students build a rapport with the instructor, and lets them relax mentally so their more comfortable to get started on the tasks at hand when class begins.
