keeping them focused

I play words association games and split the class in 2

In a diverse class of different ages and lifestyles competitions are not the best solution. Yes the more class participation one has the better, but it should not be expected to continue as a successful learning criteria. As the class progresses so should the flow of the refocusing attempts.

Class competitions are a fun way to give the class a break from lecture and still learn. Sometime the more interactive the competition is the more the class learns.

Hi William,
Thanks for sharing the different strategies for keeping the students engaged in the learning process. I like class competitions as well. They are a nice break for the students while giving them learning opportunities as well.
Keep up the good work.

I love the idea of competition in the class - it can bring a real energy. In the culinary arena our students need to learn and understand they will be graded and evaluated by every customer every day of their career - they need to build a thick skin, get active and get competitive. If you pull back you aren't going forward.
Word association, jeopardy style games in the classroom and plate to plate in the kitchen. It takes strong motivation to be successful and competition can bring this out for many students - but of course, not for all. Have to recognize those who do not respond quite so well in this area and develop activities they can engage in without so much pressure. There of course is no one path thats right for everyone.
