Visual Aids

Whenever I discuss a component/s I like to pass out the component to the students so they can see it, touch it, feel it, for themselves.

I too, use this approach and have great sucess with it like if I am teaching a section and introducing the students to a component I like to them to have that part in front of them so can see it as I talk about it

i agree , talking about it and being able to show it seems to drive it home , power point is great but nothing beats live visual aids .

Hi Harry,
Illustrations and examples really help students make applications and internalize the information they are receiving. Your methods help them to see this in many different ways. Good job.
Gary

When explaining food service cost control I'll grab anything I see off a students desk and create a "physical scenario" to illustrate a printed concept. Using the book idea while looking at something a classmate has seems to work well.

Hi Barbara,
Right you are about tasting first with our eyes. This is why I always enjoy visiting Culinary Arts programs ever chance I get. To observe the work of the students, not to mention the opportunity to taste their work is always a treat. So the more instructors can use the basic senses in the learning process the higher the retention will be.
Gary

Hi Barbara,
Using a variety of instructional delivery methods helps to give students multiple ways of acquiring the course content. Keep the variety going as it helps to keep the students engaged in the learning process.
Gary

Many of our instructors in Culinary were trained as chefs first and educators second. The use of technology has certainly transformed how we teach today. At the same time, sight, touch, taste and smell are still foundational. We definately eat with our eyes first and our students are keenly aware of the visual aspect of dining.
Barb

Learning has many facets. Visual learners do best with a variety of aids. In Culinary the demonstrations that Chefs do daily are critical to the success of our students. This is one of the many methods including such technology as power point or interactive methodology. Our students are diverse and using a variety of teaching methods including visual aids can only enhance the students success

Hi Tiffany,
Good use of a multi-sensory approach to instruction. By giving your students verbal and visual input you are enabling them to use their different senses to get the course content into their working memories. This will help them later when they need to recall what has been covered in your class.
Gary

I like to use power point because it allows them to hear my voice, for me to point out items that may not be so clear in their book or to small as well as hand out pictures that they can hold for those that need that as well. I get a better understanding of the material from the students which gives them more confidence to continue with schooling. This helps with my non-traditional student population that I serve.

in are class rooms we love to use visual aids. it helps them tounderstand what is going on in the folowing prodotion.

Hi David,
The connection between the cognitive and the tactile is important. By having the objects laid out for the students to see and handle you are building a powerful connection that will help the students to remember the key concepts.
Gary

Whenever I teach a subject I'll have the tables full of the components so the students can see the actual objects.

Bob, I agree that today's student is so much more visual with less attention than when we were in school. I like to change things around and break information into small sections so that students can grasp the material. Handouts, media, team sessions seems to help with this. Great post.

Hi Raymond,
Visual aids really students to understand concepts and applications of new material. They also can see application through visual aids.
Gary

An actual visual aid clearly explains everything.

Training aids do work great to add to the understanding of the subject matter. If the part is opened up with different colors, and they can see it fairly quickly while talking about it helps alot.

I agree with Bob. It has worked effectively with students who have not been in an academic setting, older students, and students who are visual or auditory learners.

Hi Bob,
This is a good approach since you are using a variety of delivery methods that appeals to the different senses of the students. This will help to keep them engaged.
