Student fears

I recently had to deal with student fears as this economy drops. The manufacturer of the product they are learning to work on had cut production by a large percentage. I had to reassure them that the good shops will still be good shops and that instead of buying new more people will hold on to the old and maintain it. Yes some condensing of busnesses would occur, but the good shops will still be there. The students responded positively and I felt that I allayed thier fears.

yes in adition to all the economy has afect the student with all school products.

Further, many of our students are going to be in school for some time before they are ready to enter the industry for which they are training.

One could always point out that in business and finance, situations change very quickly and their fears may not even be real when they are ready to start working.

Hi Alonzo,
With the changing labor market it is important that instructors stay on top of the emerging employment opportunities. Sometimes what appears to be a dim market is really a changing market and students need to be shown how the changes can be of benefit to them. This is an important part of instructional support.

I agree. You did a great job in settling the students fears and concerns in reference to the job market once they complete their training. It is important to keep up the students morale and out look for the future in the automotive industry.

Hi James,
Thank you for sharing this perspective. The downturn of the economy certainly has to be a part of the instruction in today's career college classes. I think you did a great job of explaining the situation in your industry so your students will see that there are opportunities waiting for them at the end of their training.
