Mid term review

It is good for the instructor to review where he is and where the students are at the mid-term period. The is allows for any changes needed to make sure the class is a success for the student and the instructor.

Hi Shannon,
I like the more direct student feedback process as well. Our college uses a general form, but it doesn't really tell me anything about the specifics of the course because it is so general.
By getting ongoing feedback from my students I am able to make any changes I need to as the course progresses thus I can better customize my course to meet the needs of the students each time I teach the course.

Our organization has our students fill out an instructor survey at the end of the quarter. I do use this as a tool to improve. What I have found to be more effective is to discuss one-on-one at mid-terms my students perforamnce, as well as mine. I ask my students for input to make their class better through lectures, activities, presentations, or hands on time. I have found this to be very helpful and because of the rapport I have built with my students my they tend to be very honest about their classroom experience.

I agree totally a mid term review is a great way to keep the students informed of their progress so that if they are behind they have the power to catch up and succeed.

the first time I used the mid-term review I discovered that I had not covered all my points fully. I asked the students to write on a paper what had been covered and the application of each subject. As I read the replies it became apparient that i had missed some very important points on what I was teaching. I now used this technique faithfully.

Hi Pattie,
Good strategy. This also prevent any misunderstandings the students might have about their class status. They know where they are at and what they have to do to complete the course successfully.

Using a mid-module or mid-term status sheet allows the student to see where they are at (grade) and how they arrived there (# of absences, tardies, missed homework, make-up tests give partial credit, etc.).

This provides the student an opportunity to address the past behaviors and to discuss a plan of action for success as well.

I use self-evaluation forms that I prepared, and monthly the students fill it out. It includes their strengths/weaknesses. Also, how they plan to correct their weaknesses for the coming mod. The hours at home they spend on their subject class, and what they would prefer discussing in the future, or have the teacher present. Bobbe Bray.

Hi Charles,
This is the feedback method I use with my students and I have had great results with it. Good to hear that other instructors are having the same results. The comments made by the students are really helpful for instructional improvement.
Gary

Ask students to write down on 3x5 cards or a short paragraph or two what they feel they have accomplihed and learned so far in the course and how it relates to their field of endeavor. Ask how they feel and what would make the course better, what they feel they should be getting out of the class, and how will it accomplish their goals. Keep the lines of communication open in order to ensure success in the classroom The info should be submitted without their names

Hi Catherine,
What is the method you use to get the feedback from your students? Do they write their comments down or share them verbally?
Gary

Sometimes it is helpful to ask students in week 2 how they feel the class is going (especially if it is your first time teaching the class).
