I've actually seen students perk up and work harder with an occational thumbs up.

I totally agree. I've had experiences with students where they simply needed to hear that they WERE good at something. In one situation, I had a basketball player who was told that because she was an athlete, she'd never understand poetry. When she started to read poetry and came up with interpretations I'd never thought of, I let her know. "Wow, I've never thought of that. That changes the whole poem, doesn't it?" It was critical for her to hear that kind of encouragement. It changed everything - her motivation toward the material, her enjoyment of poetry, and ultimately, her trust in me.

This is so true. Everyone needs encouragement and motivation. I like hearing it myself :)

I like telling students that they are doing great when they are doing great. They study harder. They smile. They listen. Even when students aren't doing all that great, a little public praise like "good answer, great idea" goes a long way. I like to empower students any way I can.

Hi Michael,
You are right about the pat on the back. This is what keeps you coming back day after day.
Gary

A pat on the back makes such a big difference. If you are having doubts about your accomplishments, this can be such a self-esteem boost.
