Enthusiasm

When you are positive and upbeat the energy in the classroom will be similar.

When you are excited about what you are teaching the students can see that. This makes them want to try harder and succeed in your class.

Enthusiasm is the number one tool in class delivery,I work in a culinary enviroment teaching ESL,if I ask students to bring recipes to discuss in class they just do the job but if i tell them "I love cooking , I cook at home on weekends, bring recipes to discuss in class and at the same time I may profit from them to do my cooking" ,I garantee the bring the best of recipes and class presentation looks like a contest. The phrase"I love cooking" helps build up the motivation ,also the fact That I can show them my own recipes.

It helps to be excited and tell the class just why something is really cool about the subject.

Your attitude in general will influence the class atmosphere....good, back, up-beat, confused, nervous..etc.

Thanks David,
The learners may well be a mirror of our efforts. A little ice breaking activity to start each class is a boost to many, too.

In my experience this is true. I have more students that enjoy class when I walk around and talk to them then when I do not. I have things that I need to do but if I take the time to chat with the students the enthusiasm and energy in the classroom is different when I am doing something else while they are working.

I couldnt agree more that when instructors face the class in a more upbeat manner, the response is heavily gratifying.

Hi Megan,
Right you are. You, the instructor sets the stage for how class is going to go that day, even when the students are having bad days. Your spirit and excitement can override the negative feeling of the students.

Couldn't agree more! If I am having an "off" day, my students don't want to do anything in class, it seems! But if I come into class happy and upbeat, they are always excited about their work for the day!

I agree wholeheartedly. When I spread the fire in my students to excel, and I believe in the relevance of the material, my students 'catch' that fire and get enthused about their work.
The opposite is equally true. The students are like sponges; what they produce is a direct reflection of what they've absorbed.

Enthusiasm is a powerful tool instructors need to apply in education. The liveliness of the subject matter being taught by the instructor helps students to maintain better focus and encourages more discussion and reflection. A smile goes a long way I have discovered.
