At the midterm, I give a progress report to each student in the class. For those students who are performing below average, I set up individual meeting times to try and dissect why they are not performing well in class. In some cases, this has developed rapport with struggling students, but has "back fired" in other cases.
Each week I meet with the students and give them grade average. We then discuss what his or her individual progress is based upon what I observe in the kitchen with their organization, sanitation, precision knife skills, speed & accuracy, cooking techniques and what their overall sense of how they see themselves doing. I work on improving myself as an instructor on a daily basis.
Hi Caryn,
It happens with all of us. Even though we tried to give support it just wasn't taken to heart and the student was not successful. The key is knowing we tried our best and refused to give up on the student even though he/she gave up on themselves.

In some situations, I feel like I was being too "nice". The struggling student still continued to struggle because of lack of effort, and failed the class anyway.
Hi Caryn,
I really like your approach to working with individual students that aren't doing well at mid-term. You mentioned in some cases your approach has back fired on you. How did they back fire and what was the outcome?
