Building a rapport with students is essential in making sure the class operates smooth.
Daniel,
Earning student respect while returning their respect leads to the development of rapport. With student rapport established you have a foundation for maximum learning to take place and much progress being made toward their stated career goals.

I think developing a rapport with students allows them to be more comfortable in their environment and thus makes for an easier and more effective way of learning. People who are more comfortable, I believe, learn more effectively
Brenda,
This is why it is important to earn their respect and then develop rapport with them. Rapport gives you insight into the students and how to shape your interaction with them to have the maximum impact on their career development.

Developing rapport with the student is important to get to know the student and how they think. What type of state of mind they are in. If you need to encourage the student to put more effort into studying the course for there success.
Leslie,
You have a very supportive and comfortable style as it relates to student engagement. This is what will keep them coming back to the class and increasing their satisfaction with their program.

If your students know that you are interested in them as a person as well as a student they tend to feel comfortable and receive the information presented more readily. The hard thing for me is not getting involved or invested in the personal issues of my students. It has been a struggle shutting off the mom mode when I enter the class room.
Students have to feel comfortable to be able to actively participate in the learning process. If you have good rapport with your students, they do feel comfortable to participate (ask questions, join in discussions, lead demonstrations etc...) It also shows the human factor of the instructor. My students do way better when they realize I'm a person with some of the same types of problems they have; I'm just further along in the learning process than they are right now.
The success of a career involves not only the knowledge of the material but also the human factor. The ambiance in the classroom between the students and the instructor has to be balance in order to help them understand the importance of good relationships in the job.
Also, the good management of the instructor-student relationship releases a lot of pressure in the classroom. The students cooperate more and respond better during the teaching process.
Kurt,
Thank you for the kind words about ED101. You are right about the foundation of being a successful instructor is the human factor and how it is displayed and used with students. For me the human factor is what keeps me in the classroom. I get so many wonderful opportunities to work with students that enrich my life.

I know that there are quite a few replies to this question….and rather than read them all, I am sure that quite a few of them are similar, I will add my response. The whole teacher- student relationship is everything. I am actually in charge of the instructors here at my school. I am the one that has to deal with Instructor/student conflicts. 99% of the time is has to do with personality differences……bad rapport. Unfortunately, some instructors struggle with proper execution of building a good rapport with their students. Most of that has to do with the instructors prideful personality. That is why I love this course and the ED101. It really shows the human factor being so important for a positive reaction from other humans.

Joseph,
Right you are. By starting with earning their trust and respect you build toward rapport. When rapport is present then teaching and learning becomes and enjoyable experience for all involved.

When you have a good rapport with the students, they will respect you more and listen more intently to what you have to say. They learn faster and get excited to come to class and learn new things.
Harry,
Trust and respect are the foundational elements needed to develop rapport with students. It is so rewarding when we get to the rapport stage and we are able to interact with students at this level. This is what makes teaching fun.

Rapport is important so that if they have a problem they fell like they can come to you for help. In the mouths that we have them lots of different things come up that they may not know how to handle and if they fell like they can approach you about it maybe I can help them though it, so that I don't lose them as students.
Marcia,
Well said. Trust, respect and rapport are all important elements of helping students to have success in the classroom and lab. The more you can demonstrate your caring the more powerful the connection there will be to the students.

Developing a connection with the students is important. Learning their names and something personal about them helps in making that connection. Being professional but personalble/approachable is also a key to eastablishing rapport.
Brian,
Trust and respect need to be present to form the foundation for the development of respect. Your points are good ones in relation to the point you made about letting students know that you care about them and their success.

It is very important to establish a rapport with your students because it allows the students to feel comfort and trust in your classroom. Without a positive rapport students may feel anxious which will be evident in their work. Knowing that you care about them goes a long way in helping the student be successful
