It seems to me that this most often arises when a student has an obscure question that requires a little research, I usually preface my response with I don't know but I can surely find out. It is also possible that when teaching legal related courses that there is not an answer at all, but at a minimum it is important to communicate this information to the students.

I too think it is important when you make a mistake to admit it. It shows you are human. It is also important though to show the students how to find the right answer to regain their confidence. Otherwise they will just remember that you don't know the answers.

I agree, owning up to your mistakes is important. Asfter all we are human and make mistakes. We can't have all the answers.

Hi Kathleen,
I am surprised that you were zapped on your evaluation by the students. My experience has been that when I make a mistake, own up to it and then bring the correct answer or follow up data to the next class the students rank me higher for putting forth the effort to bring them the most accurate information that I can.
If the culture of your school and students is to jump on someone that makes a mistake then I would be like you and be afraid of admitting such. Also, I feel sorry for the students because when they make a mistake, and they will, what will they tell themselves. We need to work hard at reducing all errors and not make mistakes but we are human so we will. When we do, admit to them and move on to the next subject. That should be the end of it unless the mistakes are made each period and reflect a lack of preparation then something needs to be done because the instructor is not fulfilling his\her professional obligations.
