be nice

be nice to people.

Christy,
A simple but powerful connector to your students and it shows them that you care. They may not have many caring people in their lives but they know you are a least one.
Gary

Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Many of our students have very little to none support in their household. Nobody to ask them how was your day? Every Monday, I start class by asking my students how was their weekend? and always listen to what they have to say and if it's a negative, we talk about how it can be a postive if they look at it another way... A smile is worth a thousand words! and saying "Good Morning" is the start of the Great Day disease.

A smile and kind word can go a long way in helping someone to refocus and get on the right track. It is just as easy to be friendly and open as to be grouchy and close minded. Steve

Be nice but do not be to nice. If you are to nice they will walk all over you.

Customer Service....We must remember that students are our customers just as we (educators)are customers to our students.

Always be positive, and wear a smile. It helps with people's attitudes also.

Hi Rhonda,
You make a good point about respect. When you earn the respect of students this leads to rapport which helps to create an environment of trust.
Gary

A smile goes a LONG way! Being nice to people also can get your point acrossed!

Being nice to the students and respecting them earns you the respect as well which in return makes the classroom setting an enjoyable one.

I treat each one of my students with a 'How are you' a 'drive safe' type of greeting or good bye. They see you care and respect them.

Hi Debra,
Good advice for us all. We are in the customer service business as educators so we need to reflect that we are excited about being in the class and sharing our knowledge with our students.
Gary

Yes, but this is not the goal of having students stay focused. This is something that should be already accomplished the minute you walk in the classroom or get online.

I always tell my students that the people who are angry are not having their needs met and although it may not be your fault, you can be a part of helping to meet those needs. Always showing up with a smile will generally melt away even the hardest of hearts. it just might take awhile for some.

Alot of students just need to be acknowledged and a smile speaks a thousand words. Also being nice in infective - be nice to them and they will be nice to someone else!

Are you a nice person Stu? It is hard to always walk the high ground in our choices. How do you do it Stu?

it takes more muscles to frown than to smile is something I always tell my student

I agree .In my short time instucting I have found just a simple hello goes a long way
