Surprise
What are some ways that a seasoned instructor can include suprise elements in a course that he/she has been teaching for many years?
I have the same question Marion. I also have to use my time very wisely to get through the needed material. I would like to incorporate more surprise or storytelling in my lectures, but am having a difficult time finding where to do so.I fear that eventually the students will feel that this course is somewhat monotonous. Any suggestions?
I only have 30 minutes to cover a chapter or less a day due to the way we structure our classes. Because of the limited time, I often times have to rush through the chapters to cover all the highlights. How do I keep everyone's attention? How can I use the surprise element when I don't have a lot of time allotted for lecture?
I have the opportunity to change books every year. This helps with new idea creation. I also utilize my advisory board for new ideas.
Hi JoAnn,
I use case studies and problem solving situations to get my students ramped up about what they are learning. I will lecture to them and then put them into small groups of 3-4 students and give them a case study. They really get into them and are excited when I have them report out on their findings. I also will have them play games using the content of our course. I make it competitive and they really like that as well, plus it is a lot of fun for them while they are learning.
