Keeping students engaged

Are there any other suggestions for keeping students engaged?

During my last class, I would lecture for the first half and then have lab for the last half. Giving the students hands on experience usually gets them back focused.

Creating a Positive Environment
Make Yourself Available
Make Your Class Safe for Your Students
Be as Positive as Possible
Read Inattentive Behaviors
Commit Yourself to Each Student

I like to use current events from the local news/newspapers to keep students engaged. I find using local news keeps students connected because those events are in their community. I also like to show movies that illustrate a point or topic, I then have discussion questions that help connect the movie to the topic. Usually the discussion questions prompt enough interaction among the students that not all questions are discussed!!

Hi Jennifer,
Right you are. Keep reminding them of application and relevancy of content you will be setting the tone for the upcoming course.

By offering your students ways that they can participate in the acquisition of knowledge and skills and then apply this newly acquired information, the fear of course failure can be reduced.

Hi Ingrid,
A lot of engagement depends on the assignments and class structure. I use small groups, problem solving and case studies to keep students engaged. Also, having them bring into class different applications of the subject matter really helps with engagement. Anything that will help them to see application and relevancy is a good way to keep them focused.
