forcus

keeping your students forcus is so important in class.

Hi Geary,
I like your use of games in your teaching. I use games a lot in my courses with great results for the same reasons you have listed. It takes very little to adapt course content to the game format plus you get to be creative in doing so. It is a "win win" for everyone.

Using the courtroom at my college, I divide the class into 4 groups. Two of the four groups must argue their points of course material against each other or be able to answer the questions from me like in a Jeopardy game fashion. Everyone participates which gives me a chance to see if the students are learning, comprehending, or just being lazy. Also, I include phrases from multiple television game shows, "You got a Minute To Win It", "Do you Want To Use A Life Line", "Come On Down" "Your Fired"... to inject humor into this type of review. Having done this several times, I noticed an increase in the student's focusing more on course material. Games are one way to evaluate the students retention and my instructional abilities.

Hi Laura,
What are some successful ways you have been able to keep your students focused?
Thanks for your input on this.
Gary
