Refocusing

How do you re-focus as an instructor?

Trina,
The more realistic you can create a learning environment the easier it will be for the students to transition into the workplace. Also, as you mention the realistic setting increases their excitement about what is being taught.

some time I am changing the class in to a real experiences environment, I am teaching Dental assistant Lab class.. students really interested and paying more attention to the subject..

Michael,
Sounds like a fun and challenging way to get the attention of the students back after break. Discussions like this that answer questions in the field are a great way to expand the understanding of the field by students.

I like to stop class where we are and take a break. But give the students a question to think about on the break. When they get back they are surprised to find I am the first one to answer my own question. Teaching culinary school, it is always the question about what motivates them about food. By answering the question myself, I get excited and can show my passion, even if I tend to forget it. It typically energizes the entire class.

I also like to make sure to keep up with new technology and developments w/in my subject or in related subjects. I have at times used this as a effective way to varry things up from term to term in my delivery adn course content building.

Rich,
Try something new in a class. Be creative with an assignment. Learn a new instructional delivery technique and then try it out. Anything to get the juices flowing and excitement up to where getting to teach is motivating once again.
