Should first day orientation be more then one day?
This would allow us to review note taking, see how well they take notes, review listening skills, get to know our students...
MARISSA,
Also, if orientation gets too long students tune out and the benefits of orientation are lost. Orientation needs to be clear and concise in content and delivery.

First day orientation should not be more than one day.At my institution, each session is two (2) hours. This is enough time to review listening skills when the class rules and regulations, along with the syllabi, are discussed. Note taking, listening skills, and getting to know our students will take time as we go through our lectures and question our students on concepts covered.Taking more than one day to do this would be a waste of valuable instruction time.
Joseph,
I agree because the students want to get into some content to check it out early in the course.

No, not in the enviroment in which I teach/train.
I agree with the 2 day orientation. One day for warm up and the next day question and answer. Students may feel more confident in asking questions on the second day.
Yes I agree students get overwhelmed with rules, and too much info.trying to take it all in, they can get keyed up.They need lots of reassureance.
It depends on the course if you have a course that is for a short time period you may end up using to much time and not be able to cover all material required.
Mandy,
I think the length of orientation depends on the structure and length of the class. You make a good point about doing a good job with orientation and then moving on. There needs to be a level of accountability placed on the students because after all they are students for a reason and that is to learn new knowledge and skills.

I'm on the other side of the fence on this one. I feel that we over orient. One day should be enough for most students. If there are students who need additional help it is out there and if you offer the resources on the first day and maybe have a tip of the day before you start each class that is a great way to keep the students learning about different aspects of the class. That way the learning happens all year and not just on a "day". I feel that would be better than a two day orientation. Its a way to keep it present.
Juan,
This would help the students to get settled into the course and feeling comfortable about what is going to come.

I believe that a 2 day orientaion would work better. You will be able to see the amount of retention ability the student has as well as there skill for thanking notes. Also if there shy about asking questions.
