Sandra,
Great to hear about the value you are gaining from these courses. I wish you much success in all your teaching efforts.
Gary

Rapport really helps when it comes time to have class discussions. If you don't develop rapport with a group it is difficult to get them to trust you enough to participate.

Personal interaction and a good rapport with students helps the student to continue on their educational path.

I feel it there is no a good rapport the student will just zoone out and would get anything you say. So much has changed since I was in school (thank God, I know I would have been better student had the teachers I had would have pratice any part of these courses

Rapport with student is important because it shows them that you care about the subject being taught...and you care that they will learn it. I'm an outgoing person and building rapport with my students comes easily...even when they attempt to be difficult! It also lets them know you are approachable and .willing to go an extra mile for them...depending on the situation.

ha nie,
Good point. Trust leads to respect and respect leads to rapport. Making a connection with students is very important in helping them to remain engaged and focused on the course.
Gary

without trust there will be no learning. The students have to trust the instructor to feel confident that the instructor knows what he/she is teaching. Without it, they'll completely broke you off.

Students feel more comfortable asking questions when you build a rapport with them. The learning process is more friendly and feels less scary for them if they feel they can trust you to provide them with fair answers.

Minds that are interested, are open. The first exercise we do on day one, even before reviewing the course material/syllabus is an icebreaker where students get to know one another. I have them discuss where they grew up, what their favorite hobby is, and what their birth order in their family is. They find they have more in common than they realized, and made a friend on the first day :).

It is important to develop a rapport with students because they need to feel comfortable and feel the instructor truly values them. Many times the students have problems outside of class. They have jobs, families and may have other difficult situtations. They need the support from the instructor and other students to truly understand that they can be successful in the course. The instructor should speak and acknowledge each student each and every class. This way they can feel that trust.

Rapport is essential for teaching because it can provide that opportunity for the student to feel comfortable with you and feel open to share some personal issues that may be affect the student's performance in class. I just think that when you have a great rapport with your students then that creates a fun and welcoming learning environment for the class as a whole.

Keveka,
They sure do. They see themselves as being valued contributors to the course.
Gary

Dorothea,
Well said. Rapport development needs to be an ongoing goal for all instructors.
Gary

Developing student rapport is important so that they feel comfortable in the class. They become more active in their learning process.

Rapport is the first most valued asset in the student/instructor relationship. Without rapport, there would be no trust. Students need to trust the instructor to provide the learning materials so they are successful in completing the class.

Geri,
Good discussion on the value of student rapport. It is important to the total development of a student. Instructors need to make it a priority in their student outreach efforts.
Gary

Rapport is important because it establish a level of communication with the student that will be used to create and sustain a learning environment.

Building a rapport with students enables them to let their guard down and to trust and respect you as their instructor. The instructor should be the first person to whom a student turns to if they need help in understanding a concept or topic. Building a rapport allows the student to open up and feel free to come to the instructor, if needed, and to give their opinion or take part in a discussion. It puts them at ease, which enables them to absorb the material that they need to learn in order to progress in their field.

I agree with you. The student must first of all trust you as the instructor. You gain that trust by being consistent in all that you do.

The development of rapport with students is important because they need to know that they are the most important person to you as a teacher. Students need to see their instructor as a person who is a facilitator of learning, who is human makes mistakes, understands how they feel, their needs and desires to become successful in college and in their future careers.
