Developing rapport will help students to keep the focus on the learning process
I have seen that developing a rapport creates an atmosphere of relaxation and the student is willing to participate in discussions with ease.
having good rapport is beneficial for you the teacher and the students. they learn better since they have confidence in you and what you teach them.
godd rapport makes students want to come to class
The devlopment of rapport is important to teaching because it reinforces the student – instructor relationship and impacts mutual trust. Rapport validates the fact that you have their best interest at heart and the fact that are an expert in a particular subject.
Everything from classroom management to effective learning environments benefits from increased student rapport. I think of itlike a rollercoaster, full of thrills and chills but ultimately non-threatening.
Hi Earnest,
Well said. Respect and rapport are two essential ingredients for teaching success. Students like to feel respected and then extend respect so everyone gets settled into the class setting.
Gary
This development lends to the comfort of the student. It is much easier to perform and learn in a relaxed setting as compared with a stressful, rigid one. I think of rapport as having students on my side.

Building rapport with the student is important because without rapport and trust a teacher cannot communicate effective. There is no way to guide the student if the teacher has no relationship with the students. This is how we find out vital information about the student. We need to know how the student feels about the course and their understanding of thier ability.
Instructors need to develop repport because it is crucial to each student's career success and it makes the instructional process easier and more enjoyable. Without rapport, students will experience fear and resentment from the instructor. Each term I am faced with students who come from various educational departments and have various personalities. From the first day, after the course objectives and syllabi have been explained, it is my goal to establish rapport. Rapport is essential in creating a trusting, a comfortable, and a positive classroom learning environment. I share personal stories, personal jokes, have them particpate in various learning activities, and encourage discussion. If rapport is established the students will listen, ask questions and contribute to the course.
Hi Scot,
This is a great point that all instructors need to remember. Developing respect and rapport are two key ingredients of learning and teaching success.
Gary
Once your students trust you, you are able to help them reach their full potential having a good rapport with your students is key to building understanding and trust.
If a student does not have a good rapport with you they will not be willing to come to you when they are having problems and trouble in class. They could be struggeling and needing additional help but they will not come to you and then you will loose that student.
Students want to know that we are there for them. Building trust and understanding of their experiences helps to build that rapport.
Hi Joyce,
So true. Respect and rapport are powerful engagement and retention tools that instructors need to develop and use.
Gary
I agree we must develop trust.
Building rapport with your students will help boost their confidence level and help both you and the students break the ice and get to know each other better. They will value you as a person and respect you more.
I try to establish rapport with the students every day. I believe the rapport with students lets them know that you really do care about them and the learning experence they are having. When you become better related to the students, they will listen to you, no matter the subject and then ask questions. The rapport you have with them will make them contribute in the classroom and ask questions related to the class.
I agree without the rapport the student comes to class but just doesn't really listen to what you are teaching. Looking back on it I was the same type of student.
The reasons that the development of rapport with students is so important in teaching is that it establishes trust and mutual understanding between the instructor and the students. It facilitates the learning process by helping to put the students at ease in the classroom, and allows them to devote more of their energies toward learning. It will also help reduce class management issues. It will increase retention, because the students feel they have a secure learning environment, and that the instructor and their fellow students are on the same team in achieving their goals.
