REFOCUS
Sometimes when you have to refocus your class, it si best to slow down. listen or "read" your class and then ask questions. By asking questions, you can see what path you need to go down to refocus the class or get them reengaged. How do you learn from this? It helps the instructor create a better understanding of how the student is receiving the subject manner.
Denise,
Thank you for the advice you have given us about how to REFOCUS and get back on track. This is good information for instructors to remember as they get into the middle or latter part of a course. This is when students can get derailed and lost their focus on why they are in school and in this course.

Refocusing a class that has gone astray from the learning objective is difficult. I tend to lecture in 15 minute intervals and we use some quiz activities to put the knowledge they have just learned to use. It does require a moment to listen and assess what path the class has gone astray to and to devise a method of refocusing students in these situations.
I have had to refocus a couple of times in my classes. When you get a group that appears to not be interested in what you are teaching you have to find another way to get them interested again. Some classes prefer to be more active than others so I design hands on exercises that gets them back on track and interested again.

Courtney,
I like your point about listening to the students. Listening or reading the students will give you insight into how you can adapt your instructional delivery and meet their learning needs at a higher level of success.
