Valuing students opinions

You are training students to operate at skill levels required in the business.

Patrick,
This is always a tough situation to be placed in as an instructor. Currently I am using a supplemental packet to the course textbook because no one like the text and it has a number of questionable practices listed. With the packet I can offer the latest and most accurate information while still complying with the school policy of using the textbook that was selected by the home office.

I completely agree that we have to "set the standards in our courses based upon the standards of our fields"

My students dislike the new text that was placed into service. I teach the text based on the objectives.

Felix,
We need to set the standards in our courses based upon the standards of our fields. This way our students will know what the expectations will be for them when they enter the workplace.

Jonathan,
This is a very good point for students to consider. There is a big difference between entry level knowledge and later in career experience. We do change and grow with the additional expertise with acquire.

I disagree, sometimes students doing school to advance further in their career. Setting up low standards may discourage them from learning

I also tell my students that they will be entering the field on an entry level. With that being said I say to them, dont be surprised if your opinions change over time due to experiences and observations. We often miss the nuances and fine detail of things that we only have the chance to experienc from the outside.

I inform students that when they finish school there going to be at entry level, it takes time to build experience we all start somewhere

Students may have preconcieved notions as to what the industry expects of them and by valuing their opinions on this, I feel it offers opportunity to enhance their learning (meaning "let their opinions of skill levels required help motivate their efforts").

Angela,
That is correct and this message needs to be understood by the students. This is why you set the standards you do because you are preparing them for their next career step and that is employment.
