Always focus on what your students have to bring to the table. You will loose the entire class if you show no focus on them. They are nervous enough having to speak. Let them know that what they have to say is important.
James,
Thank you for these words of caution about how we involve our adult learners. We need to maintain a balance with them in terms of getting their input but not letting them overtake the class.

Mitessa,
Great way to be the blood flowing and the brain reset but is fun as well.

Acknowledging everyone in a class presents two consistent challenges with adult learners: 1. those that think they know the material and can be out of date/out of touch with current trends and therefore taking the class off on a tangent that you’ll need to correct, 2. Not every student has a relevant comment to add to the dialogue and presenters need to be cognizant of that. After all, they are there to learn.
Yes, this is so very effective! I love to stop unexpectedly and get everybody out of their seats to do an applicable exercise!
I agree. Students can be fickle. If you ignore them once, you are lost. They also have very good content at times.
DANIEL,
It is easy to be a passive learner in a class. As instructors we need to use activities that will move our students from being passive to active in the class. You have listed for us a very good reminder of why we need to make sure every student participates.
