Encouraging student rapport
I find that if you speak convincingly about some of your past projects, interactions with dealing with inspectors and knowing your rights. The students see you as a individual that may or may not have faults? You though are helping them to understand real world ethic's and what can happen when you don't hold up your personal emphases on quality and delevering your product. The students then can help to place themselves into the situations and know that they can relate to a real life circumstances. This help everyone feel that they could open up and relate to class after hearing personal stories.
NORMA,
You make two good points about the value of sharing stories from the field. The first gives them application and relevance strategies in terms of using the content they are studying and the second is that you were once a student yourself. Many students seem to think that instructors were never students nor that they had to study, struggle and work to get where they are. These stories help them to see their instructors in a more human and life experienced light.

Personal stories help the instructor to get across to the student how they handled issues back in their day. If also illustrates to the student that you have struggled but achieved succcess.
Elizabeth,
Personal examples and stories from the field help to show the relevance of the content and the application of the information and skills being shared.

I think using personal examples and stories realy draws in students
William,
This information is so important for students to have shared with them. They need to know more about the soft skills and the emotional aspects of their area. Many only see the technical skills they are learning so the more your can help them connect the dots between the skill area and the soft skills the better.
