rapport
I found that rapport is easy to get with students, but I have some problems with homework and the load they think it brings. this causes stress for me personally because we do most of it in class. where is the cut off line to what you should do
Sherlian,
Right you are. I use the three B's as I strive to earn the respect of my students. Be fair, Be consistent, and Be the learning leader. These three B's will form the foundation from which rapport is developed.

Some students you can develop rapport with fastor than others but I think the key is being consistant, fair and approachable.
hi
I genuinely working with students helping them develop their career skills. I like to learn about the life stories of my students, the triumphs and challenges. I care about people and I believe that it shows on my face.
Bruce,
As much as they groan about these ongoing quizzes the way you use them are in reality very valuable to the students just as you mentioned. They also bring accountability to the students in that they are over homework so they realize you have assigned homework for a reason and it needs to be completed in order for them to do well in the class. I love the part about where the thank you at the end of the course for helping them to be better test takers. Keep up the good work!

Students usually groan or look shocked when they hear about my policy, but I give them quizzes as often as I can. I aim for a quiz every class that consists of 1-2 questions taken directly from the homework. I don't pick the most difficult ones, something usually in the middle that will hit all the key concepts from the previous class (I'm math teacher).
I've had students come to me after the semester say that the daily quizzes helped prepare them for test taking, as it got them familiar with the mindset of taking a test and also put them at ease.
How many times have we heard the whole "I'm not a good test taker" excuse?
Barbara,
This is a good question in terms of the value associated with assigned homework. Why is it being assigned and how is the completion of the homework being used in the course are two questions that need to be asked. Try to make the homework more than just reading of chapters. Assign case studies or problems that the students need to think about and work through and this will increase the value of homework for the students. It cannot be seen as just busy work.
