How to keep students focused on task

Learning takes work but it also should be fun. So we need to plan activities that will get the students engaged and excited about what is being taught while keeping them moving forward in their learning and career growth.

Keeping the tasks fun and relevant to what they are supposed to be learning helps me. For example, encouraging them to relate the learning exercise to past personal experience helps to cement the knew concepts.

I teach computer drafting. My secret to keeping students focused is to try and do different types of drawing assignment daily. Either hand sketching, computer drafting, look for building photos and assemble a scrapbook of design features they like. Then we discuss the photos.

This is a good example of how course content can be enhanced through examples. The more examples you use the more opportunities students have to make applications to what is being covered. This helps to make the course real to the students and this is when motivation occurs.

I've noticed that students are more focused during my class when I use a lot of examples of the culinary industry. They're culinary students and writing composition is not exactly a "fun" or "interesting" class for them, so by me incorporating the culinary industry into my class, I have their attention and enthusiasm.

I think that a key to keeping a student focused it to make attainable goals, and recognize them for there achievement.. The better we do in navigate them toward there goal, and the student achieves said goal, the more focused they will be in their future endeavors in there course of study..
