Managing Participation

The idea of assigning the takative student the role of observer will help with managing participation. This has been one of my most challenging areas, and I am looking forward to implementing this idea.

One little trick that works for me in lack of participation area; When a course 1st starts, at the end of the chapters that have Review questions, or even when we are reviewing classroom assignments; or homework: I have all the students each read 1 question out loud to the class...so everyone has to participate in the reading of class materials. I find once they get used to talking in front of the class for few weeks of reading the questions, they start to participate more in regular class discussions.

I like this idea as well and look forward to trying it

Managing participation is class is key to organization and keeping the students interest.

Vanessa,
This strategy will enable you to bring out contributions from the more shy students and still keep the dominant students involved in the class. I wish you much success with this effort.

I am seeing an increasing trend of 2 students dominating the open discussions. I think giving them a job of recording and reviewing the classes gives them the challenge of relearning through teaching and it will open the floor for my less active students.

Mary,
I think you are going to like the results that you get from using this strategy.
