how do you get student to care
Hi Al,
I like the "Wall of Accomplishment" display. This gives the students something concrete to look at so they can see themselves in such a picture if they work hard at learning the content and skills.

I agree, I have many students as well who are part of the "entitlement" generation. mom & dad have provided them with all of the wants they have have. Its hard for them to break away from that thinking but praise for a job well done if it is truly warranted makes them see they can do things for themselves & excel at them. I also have built a "wall" of accomplishment photos. I teach culinary so photos are taken of a great display & then posted on the wall. It gives a great sense of accomplishment & pride.
I often have young students who have been given eveything they asked for, and also, have had very little discipline. Mom and dad didn't require them to do much, and gave in to the kid whenever there was a dispute. It's difficult to get them motivated, but I agree that positive reinforcement when they complete a task works better than negative when the balk.
That’s a tough one,
I don't believe that they don't care, I think it is more of not knowing how to do things for them selves.
Most of the youth these days are a part of that entitlement generation. Every thing has been either given to them or done for them in the blink of an eye.
What we need to do as instructors, teachers, role models, is break them away from this attitude.
One technique I try to employ is what I call simple rewards. Early on in the lab I assign the students simple tasks, such as looking up a torque spec., trouble chart , torque sequence, etc., that can be accomplished with little effort but seems to be monumental to the student. When they have finished the task, praise them for what they have accomplished on their own.
Sometimes the student just needs to find out for themselves that it’s OK not to have everything handed to them. They may not like this concept at first and “him and haw” a little, but with constant reinforcement and acknowledgement, the concept grows on them.
Try and relate the information from the course to his or her life and or career goals. Continue to reinforce why they enrolled in the college in the first place.
Hi Ronald,
By showing them that you care about their success and that you are helping them to create a future for themselves.
