BE THE BEST
I teach an engine building course and I regularly have students that there goal is to blow it up. I ask them, did Lingenfelter, Roush, our Saleen make their names by blowing thinks up?
Earn some bragging rights by being the best group out there, make the most power, and see if you can get done and help another team. That's taking pride in your workmanship.
Hi Michael,
I like it. By setting goals where the students use their new found knowledge and skills they get to see what they can do yet they have the safety net of the instructor there to assist should they need the help. This could also be turned into a competition at some point along the way.

How about giving them the goal of making the most power without the engine blowing up. This is what professional engine builders would want. This way they strive for the right thing and have motivation to get there.
I teach an engine building/dyno tuning class as well. It is pretty easy to motivate in this setting, however, the desire to BE THE BEST takes more effort. I like to show them dyno graphs of big engines built in the field, then show them dyno graphs of little engines built and tuned by previous students that make more power and torque across the entire rpm range. After seeing the comparison, I ask them what their customers would think about them. This shows them what they are going to recieve in the course. They can do more with less! The Desire to work for their education is there...to BE THE BEST! Easy Money.
I teach student about being detailed, and taking
pride in there work.Giving lessons learned from
great engine builders.
I agree. No matter what you are teaching or doing, always strive for that "self gratification"! Be proud of every job you do!
