learning enviroment
Unless the classroom or lab has a comfortable feel where the student can relaxe or let done barriers that would not allow the information to be recieved there will be no learning. You might as well be talkig to the walls.
I try to create this for every class. I ask the students to class knowing that this is their time to learn, share and not be taxed by things going on outside. I really want the classroom to be a sanctuary of sorts so that students can obtain the full benefit of the short time we spend together, in order they can maximize their learning potential. With many of my students this is the only time they are able to do this. I’ve had students that were marginal at the onset of their academic career progress very well, because their classroom was a laboratory to try new ideas and learning styles that were not previously available to them.
A lot of times I will make mistakes on purpose just to let the students know that I don't expect perfection because I am not perfect myself! I've found that this does a lot to make them feel more comfortable.
Motivating students today is never easy. It takes an extra positive attitude to incentivise them. It seems some they feel their entitled even if they dont deserve it. I also have found that criticisim when given properly will drive them, sometimes more than praise that isn't deserved.
Frank,
I couldn't agree more with leaving your own issues at the door. Along with that I have found in my years of instruction that the more I ask for and expect good work, the student's can and will perform to a higher level.
I'm postitive and encouraging the whole way. This support I find is necessary.
Christine
Hi Frank,
Good plan. You are reflecting a professional attitude by focusing on the learning needs of your students when you enter the classroom. Everything else stays outside.
Gary
I be myself. I leave my problems at the door.I focus on the subject and try to find common ground as a platform to build a relationship not only as a class but also on individual needs to bring the entire up to the highest level they can reach.always set the bar high, the more you expect the more they will try to please.
Hi Frank,
Right you are about creating a feeling of comfort for students. What are some strategies you use to create such a setting for your students?
