I think motivating students and providing them feedback are two of the most important goals for each instructor. Constant feedback and encouraging students and motivating them are essential for each course.
I completely agree with this statement. I always provide a student both positive and constructive feedback on an assignment. I try to find a balance so that a student feels that they are walking away motivated to keep learning and want to do better.
Hi Hanna,
You are right on with your immediate feedback policy. This is so important for students. It really helps to keep them engaged and focused on the course.
Gary
I try to give my students feedback as soon as possible and then try to add a few encouraging words.
Hi Shane,
Good way of reaching the entire class but offering individual comments and support when needed. This way you are using your time effectively but still showing each student you are supportive of their learning success.
Gary
I can see how serious my students are when they got their assignments back. They will read my comments over and over again. Sometimes, they even share those feedbacks to their classmates. I like to leave some suggestions on my students' assignments; however, it is hard to do that when I have a large class. In this situation, I'll address their common problems to the class. I also allow them to see me afterward just in case some of the questions are not answered thoroughly.
Hi Mark,
Good point and good quote that all instructors should be aware of. I know all of us have taught next to that instructor that has retired on the job years ago they still just collect their paycheck. I don't know how they can live with themselves not to mention how boring it must be to not be excited about the field.
Gary
Your own motivation can foster theirs. I tell my students all the time, "The first day you see me not enthusiastic about teaching math, tell me. I'll resign immediately."
Years later, I'm still at it.
Hi David,
Everyone likes to receive feedback and to know where they are in relation to work that they are doing, be it school or work. The more feedback one can provide the more accepting students will be to feedback that calls their attention to improvements they need to make.
