ALL INSTRUCTORS/STUDENTS NEED MOTIVATION FOR CONTINUED LEARNING PROCESSES.
Hi Paula,
Good example of a poor strategy. I agree with you this is something that I would not want to do with my students. There are too many positive approaches that can be used instead.

This reminds me of an instructor I had in court reporting school, years ago... he told all the students in the class who were over 30 that we would never pass the state exam, and that we shouldn't even be in the program.... I never knew if he said this to lay down the gauntlet for us to prove him wrong, or what... I proved him wrong, but I never respected his approach. Telling someone they won't achieve a goal is counter-productive to what teaching (motivating and inspiring) is all about, seems to me. One good came from this instructor's approach... I vowed never to do that to another student, should I ever end up teaching. Here I am, now teaching, and I remember his negativity often as something to avoid carrying forward.
Hi Christin,
Well said. Your attitude is what makes the class exciting and it helps to keep the students engaged in the learning process.

Some days I feel like the Head cheerleader!
I always let my students know that comming into class w/ a positive attitude everyday is 1/2 the battle! When you come in prepared ready to go,you have the first step done! Now just absorb all that it is that you want to learn!
