Types of motivation

In my field, motivation can come often in the form of pushing the students to the edge of the learning process. This is more to prepare them for what they are about to embark upon in their chosen field. Would this be considered negative?

Hi Alicia,
I agree with you about pushing students. I have high standards for my students. These standards reflect the standards of the field. I provide the instruction and support that will help the students to get to their career goals. To push them to the point that they crack is not good teaching it is using a position of authority to bully students.

Hello,

I do not think pushing to far is negative. However, once professional and care for students feelings are considered and it is communicated to students that they are being prepared for the real world is understood, I think that is fine. I know that some instructors push till they make students cry and this to me is completely unacceptable….

I will use this technique as well, but some students can be pushed farther than others. I need to determine this first. I have had some situations where students actually ask to be pushed harder.

Hi Jennifer,
No not really if they understand the purpose of being pushed and how this is preparing them for the future. You need to keep a careful eye on each student to make sure you don't push too far in your efforts.
