student motivation

Here is a little healthy competition for motivation. At times we have the same course running in the morning and afternoon. When this happens occasionally we will set the classes against each other. We will post the test averages for both classes on the board and the winner after all tests but the final gets a predetermined prize. Usually some food item such as donuts.

I is amazing what pizza and ice cream can do to motivate...

I like this idea. It keeps the students on their toes and everyone loves to win a prize. :)

Hi Gary,
Good examples--well said. I am a big foodie myself and use it a lot in my classes. It really helps to bring the class together.

Food should be a chapter by itself.

Another thing that works is building team identity. When one group can claim bragging rights from a competition they take on some pride in their work.

Remember the Titans, the Marine Corps, World Series winners, Jeopardy winners, etc.

Hi Warren,
I am a big fan of competition because it gets the students excited and involved. This really helps with the learning process as well. Anytime you introduce food it gets students looking forward to the outcome.
