Students are motivated by understanding the material that is presented to them. They are motivated by good grades. Motivation in my class also comes in the form of praise and acknowledgement.

Susan,
We cannot take the responsibility lightly. We do impact their lives and we need to keep in mind that we have done everything we can to help each and every student be successful. We only ask in return that each student put forth the effort needed to be successful in our course. This is a win win for everyone.

I agree. Sometimes a teacher is the only person in a student's life who believes in their success. Planting the seed is so important and nurturing their belief in their own success is key.

Maurice,
Like all three of these words because they do reflect what a professional educator should be about as he or she approaches the classroom and interacts with students.

I believe dedication, enthusiasm and passion are very important to success as an instructor, I also believe an important part of being a good instructor is helping the student discover that they can be successful.

Andrea,
You make a good point concerning the "bounce-back" factor. Students come to school with backgrounds and pressures that are hard to understand and yet they stick in school and graduate. I love going to these graduations because it keeps me focused on why I am a teacher. Seeing their families stand by them for photos puts into perspective how much influence we can have in helping them to overcome barriers and make them and their families proud.

Nearly every student if not all of the students I've worked with, love to see positive progress in their learning experience. Whether it's perfect attendance or seeing themselves catch up after a personal set back that affected their education such as completing make up time, passing an exam or quizzes either initially or after a retake where they studied harder and accomplished success, these things can be even bigger motivating factors towards a student's education. For some students, knowing that they "bounced-back" after a set back can be a bigger boost to their self-esteem than a student who passes each class seemingly easily.

LeAnn,
Showing them what their future may be like in terms of salary potential and employment opportunities really gets them ramped up about what they are learning. They start to get a vision of where they can take their careers.

Personal professional success stories, facts and figures about the industry and their future within it.

motivations factors it can be many thins like students feel this course help them 4 future. the way the instructor represent it. shows how existing is course.

Yes Yolanda, Instructors can transfer their excitement and confident to know well in the area that they are teaching to students that are why some of the classes are more successful.

Although I think dedication, enthusiasm and passion are very important to success as an instructor, I also believe a very important part of being a good instructor is helping the student discover that they can be successful. They sometimes need to be taught how to make that happen and have to know that someone else believes in them. Knowing that they can be successful is a motivator to push them forward in their career goals.

Sarah,
It is important that we help our students with both of these forms of goal setting. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic goals contribute to the career growth of students. By using both we have a better chance of keeping our students motivated and forward focused.

Some factors that contribute to student motivation is intrinsic goals, meaning their personal goals to be good at something. Another factor is they are also motivated by extrinsic things as well like being able to make more money to afford nicer things.

Glenn,
Thank you for these comments in relation to using different types of motivation techniques with students. The higher the level of motivation the greater the engagement will be by the students. This creates a win win situation for both the instructor and them.

There are many factors that contribute to student motivation. Those mentioned in this course include focusing on social relationships; external expectations such as family members, employers, or human resource providers; social welfare of students wanting to contribute back to the community; personal advancement, escape/simulation; cognitive interest; and mystery. These factors align with the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that states that motivation first focuses on physiological needs and then is followed by safe, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization accordingly. To help play on student motivation, we as instructors should also focus on the ARCS Motivation Model in addition to those strategies listed in this course. The ARCS Motivation by Keller created in 1979 has a four-factor theory to explain motivation focusing on attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. Instructors should first arouse and sustain curiosity and attention, connect the instruction to important needs and motives, help students develop confidence in success and generate positive expectancies, and finally manage reinforcement and help keep students control of expectations.

Jeffrey,
Right you are and the more we know about our students the more accurately we can provide support to them as needed.

Self satisfaction, achievement, growth and well- being are factors that contribute to student motivation.

Hossai,
You make a good point about personal motivation. There are many types of motivation and as instructors we should hit on as many as we can so our students can see an application of one of the motivating factors in their own life. Once they can do that they can really focus on being successful in the course since they know what is driving them.

I believe that every student has their own motivation for being in class. Some student's motivation is truly helping others and it may have started with another caring person helping them out or a family memeber. Another motivation I truly believe is money. Gaining the skills to make someone successful in their field to make decent money to live a good lifestyle. Maybe they want something different than what they had growning up
