Module 4

Is it important to have empathy toward your students?

I believe it's important to have empathy, but also remain grounded in the objectives of the class. By that I mean don't become so empathetic that it becomes a detriment to the student's overall learning.

Hi John,
Empathy can be demonstrated by developing a connection with each student. For some students this easier to do that with others. By having some common points of interest with students you can demonstrate your support for their success. Once they know you are there for them as they proceed through the course and understanding of their situations then empathy becomes a part of your instructional persona.

Dr. Meers, how would you go about demonstrating empathy? Do you have any suggestions outside of the module material on how to better employ it in our classes?

Hi Jenell,
I think it is critical to have empathy for your students. Empathy is having an understanding of where the students are coming from and the circumstances of under which they are coming to school. This understanding is very helpful when they talk with you about their assignments and their future career goals.
