MOTIVATION THROUGH POSITIVE REIMFORCEMENT
MY THOUGHT IS TO BE GENEROUS WITH PRAISE AND VERY CAREFUL WITH CRITICISM.EVERYONE NEEDS AN "ATTA BOY" ALMOST DAILY.ONCE THAT COMPLIMENT IS GIVEN ASK THE STUDENT TO SET A NEW GOAL FOR THEMSELVES OR THROW DOWN A CHALLANGE. A GOOD TIME TO DO THAT IS RIGHT AFTER SAYING "JOB WELL DONE."
I agree with your thoughts on using positive reinforcement. There are situations where we do need to correct students if they are making errors in their work e.g. math class, or APA format. I will use the sandwich approach, where I will begin with a positive and let them know they completed this or that well, then I will lead into letting them know what they might improve upon or what might be corrected. Offering examples in this section has always been a good tool as well. Then when I end, I end on a positive note with them offering more praise or complimenting their work, examples, format, and etc. This works very well for both in the classroom and online. After all everyone likes to know what they do well, not just the negative stuff!
I do believe that prise is important for everyone. I try and give the little gestures such as a smiley face on the quiz or an "excellent job" to the students so they know that they are valued!
sometimes criticism can get a little outa hand so i watch what i say to students
