Motivation
I have found that setting up a friendly yet competitive environment amongst students in my classes has worked to create a great atmosphere where students come self motivated and ready to do better than the next. The easiest way I have achieved this is by telling students to take a look around and that the people sitting next to them will be their greatest competition!
Many students have issues in classes, and this can lead to lack of motivation. As an instructor, we need to motivate the student, give them examples of how they can be successful in your class, and constantly monitor their progress.
Hi Patricia,
I agree about the competition. Many instructors don't like to have competition in their classes but I feel that competition if done in a light manner way can be fun for the students plus helps them with their problem solving skills. They need to be able to compete because if they don't they are not going to be successful in the work place where there is competition everywhere.

This could be a motivating factor for some, but intimidating for others. Those that surround them could also be coworkers as well as competitors. Peer pressure to not let one another down in a group project can be effective as well.
A little healthy competition is a great motivational tool for getting students involved in learning the lesson at hand. This is a great opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their interpretation of what they have learned and to pass on their newly found knowledge to their fellow classmates.
