Motivating Your Students
What is a couple of ways that you use to motivate your students to achieve and be successful in regards to their career goals?
I let them know that I am here for their success and I will try to help them achieve their goals. I encourage them to go beyond what the class requires and to be the best that they can be.
David,
I appreciate your kind words. I wish you continued success in helping to educate the next generation to enter the field.
Gary
Hi Gary,
I really enjoy teaching because of the great time I had out in the field applying the theories in the book. I get excited about the topics because work in the field was a challenging game everyday and I knew the rules. Asking the student questions about the topic or lesson is a game we play togather. This builds confidence in the student and now they have the desire to want to learn more.
Thank you for the response,
David
David,
Making it personal is a powerful learning tool and you are doing that with your approach. You have my interest and I'm not even in the class. Great job.
Gary
I like to find something that is important to the student and build on that enthusiasm. For example: Fine tuning an engine to make an additional 15% more horsepower and getting .75 more miles per gallon at the same time.
The first thing I do is to keep my enthusiasm for the material at a high level. I feel if I'm excited, perhaps the students will remain excited as well.
I try to break up my lessons into various activities. I try to blend lecture with tactile learnings, to keep the students boredom to a minimum.
Hi Richard,
Great point! You are right passion is a great selling point for acceptance and learning by students. If they know you have passion they become a part of the process as passion spreads. This makes teaching such an enjoyable career because we get paid to teach about something we love.
Gary
I believe that the single most important way to motivate a student is by having passion for what you are teaching. Passion translates into student excitement and a desire to learn. My instructors and I have maintained a 92% retention for 6 years and nothing we really have to work that hard at because of the passion we have.
when given a complicated lab exercise and they follow procedure, i like to reinforce that they are using skillsets that will make them successful in the field.
give them realistic goals they can take to real life more money ,advancement.
The self satifaction and pride they will achieve by doing well in class.
I can relate to this. I also bring my experience both success and failure to the class room. I let my students know that we SHOULD learn from our failures--and everyone does fail at times. This gives them the confidence to be wrong at times. I also apply humor, it triggers that part of the brain that helps them remember that particular lesson.
Assuring them of there success by making them confident of thier abilities. Understanding that professionalism is key> Not to worry about knowing everything on the fist day. No one needs supertech. They need quality people passionate about there profession. Willing to work hard to accheve thier goals.
Hi Steve,
This is a great teaching asset. This way you and the students have immediate feedback on their performance and they then know where they need to improve their skill development.
Gary
We have an the ability to test the training aids after the students work on them, witch give the students an incentive to do the work well.
I motivate my students by demonstating a task on the object that they will be working on. Putting up questions on the board on what just occured. This reinforces what they just seen and setting their own goal next to perform the same task that they just witnessed.
Hi Michael,
Good approach to inspire your students in an area that they don't at first see a need for. You are turning that around and letting them see how essential your service writing is to their future. Keep up the good work.
Gary
I bring in quotes from people who are succesful.I let them know that i was once sitting in thier seats and the things I have been able to accomplish with my education at the same learning institution that they are attending. If i could do it, so can they. i tell them that I am proud of them for being there and setting a career path for themselves. I empower them by letting them know that if they remain on the right path with the right motivation and frame of mind that success will be thiers, its only a matter of time.
One of the ways I motivate my students is to make the chapter enjoyable and relaxed but yet filled with information, because when they see there is different ways to learn they open themselves to a whole new world for them to understand what is going on, this helps some to open their eyes to new ways on dealing with people which helps with their careers.
