Seeing each course as a "graduation / commencement point"
Even in career education we use the "Carrot" or "program completion" as the goal of learning. What if, at the end of each course / quarter/ semester our student would write a resume of additional skills they have because of the learning from the / quarter/ semester and then listed additional jobs they could apply for ... i.e. Maybe they can't be a hand on tech yet, but they could work a helpdesk ... As faculty we need to see that even one course in a program can give our learners a wider access to employment - even before program completion.
Wow. I think that this is a great concept/ activity for students. I frequently have students who complain about the relavency of certain topics. To be have them put all of it together at the conclusion of a class, they should be able to relate how everything "fits".
I agree, in the medical field jusat learning some of the terminology can get you in the front door as a receptionist, resulting in employment and possible promotion after graduation.
That is an interesting concept. I teach in the evening, while my primary (daytime) job is in state government. Since several of my students are working minimum wage positions, I have been actively pointing out job openings in state government, which typically pay 50% more to start, and have fringe benefits. No one has been hired yet, but we are trying!
