Hello
How to motivate Students who are not willing to come to class?
John,
It sure does. Knowing someone cares about their success is important in student retention.

one of the ways we deal with this subject is to personally call the student when they are absent...this shows the student that you care about them
I contact them through email and telephone. We discuss their goals and I ask them to let me help them, just give school, me, and class a chance and see how we all can be successful. Works about 80% of the time.
I think if you express the the sucess and the achieve to over come it will be rewarding.
Lynnette,
You really can't. You can reach out to them via email-phone-etc. but if they are not engaged you aren't going to be able to get them to come to class. Their absence is larger than you so focus on the students that are motivated and coming to class and do the best you can with them. When I lose a student I am always sad but I reflect on the fact that I did everything I could to keep that individual in my class so the failure does not rest on me but on that person. I let them know the door is always open and they can come back at anytime they want if they are willing to put forth the effort to be successful.
