Can some students be motivated to learn?

Are there some students that just cannot be motivated to learn?

Wendy,
This is the human factor in teaching. We need to work with our students so they can see that we are there to help them be successful if they will put forth the necessary effort. This type of support goes a very long way in getting students engaged in the learning process.

I agree these are really tough cases. Sometimes, behind the anger is fear. If I can get to that, I find it easier to difuse the anger and make a connection with the student

Denise,
Sad but true. We have all had them and we do the best we can but in the end it is up to them to be successful. If anger is the bigger part of their life then we are going to be of little or no help to them.

I too, have some of those students. It is difficult to teach a student who is angry at the world, and the only goal in life is controversy. I make my class fun, but sometimes you just have those type of students are unwilling and you cannot get through to them.

Some students require more attention, more hands-on, more nurturing, more motivational techniques than others but I feel even the most uninterested and unappreciated student can be motivated to learn, however, we, as instructors do not have the resources nor correct amount of time necessary to achieve this type of motivation in the classroom.

Students must stay focused on learning but how can you do that when you are concerned about just surviving for the next day. We have students who do not know where their next meal is coming from or where they will sleep during the night, or if they can get passed the drug dealers and gang bangers without being accosted.

Lift these obstacles to learning and they are prime candidates for motivational learning.

Yes I try to encourage by getting excited about the project we are starting.

I always show my enthusiasm for lessons no matter response from students

Yamil,
Unfortunately the answer is yes. We try to reach each student but for some reason they will not become engaged in the learning process. I continue to try and reach these students while focusing on those students that want to be there and are willing to learn. They have the right to a quality education so I won't let some negative attitudes take away from their success.
