Enthusiasm Missing in Action

Some instructors are a wailing bore. After 5 degrees, I am here to bear witness.

At various times I have talked to students from other schools. They will really tell you the way it is.

Some individuals drone on until everyone is either falling asleep or sleeping with their eyes open. Their eyes glaze over.

As I was trained to be a school principal, I am aware that evaluations and gentle feedback can be helpful. I am referring to evaluations of instructors.

Their peers and supervisors need to gently help them see themselves and re-ignite their excitement. Sometimes their lack of self confidence is inhibiting release of their emotive aspects that can present enthusiasm.

In house workshops can be helpful.

Hi David,

You talked about evaluation of your instructors and I wondered if you have heard of the newest thing called 360-degree feedback.

If other avenues haven't worked this might be worth a try. Basically, the teacher is evaluated by multiple sources: peers, students, self, and their immediate supervisor. This should show the teacher that other people are not necessarily agreeing with their own assessment of their talents.

Margo,
We need to bring enthusiasm and excitement to the classroom/lab each time we teach. If we aren't excited it is for sure the students won't be.

Enthusiam also stems from passion what you do. As instructors we must demonstrate a passion for what we do and student will become motivated by the passion generated by instructors.

David,
Good insight. Having been through so many courses as a result of your different degrees you have a clear understanding of what effective teaching is and should be about. I am sure that you are able to help beginning instructors find their way in the delivery process. Learning as you know and have observed can and should be enjoyable and engaging.
