Motivating your students may be a challenge but if you have build that rapport a may be easier motivate the class. Being organized and ready for class is helpful.
Students stay motivated if they see that their instructor is well knowledged about the information being presented to them.

I agree if they look at you and say does this person know what they are talking about then you have lost them and will have to work five times as hard to get them back on track or motivated.

Motivating your students when you have different age groups can be quite the challenge. I am a very enthusiastic instructor with tons of energy and great ideas in how to reach all students and their learning styles. Hands on approach, letting them know the objectives for the evening. Don't put all the fun stuff first. Make them wait and build the excitement for the lab.
